How to use the Dyson Airstrait™ straightener on different hair types
Achieving sleek, straight hair without the use of hot plates and extreme heat used to be impossible. However, the Dyson Airstrait™ straightener has made straightening your hair easier, quicker, and safer. Read how you can use your Dyson Airstrait™ on different hair types to create your ideal straight hairstyle.
The Dyson Airstrait™ works on all hair types
The Dyson Airstrait™ works in the same way on every hair type. You simply wet your hair and section it, then take one section at a time and place it in the Dyson Airstrait™. Glide the machine through your hair to achieve beautiful, natural-looking straight hair full of body. For those with Type 3 and Type 4 hair, this will give you a stunning stretched out look without flattening your hair, unlike traditional hot plate straighteners.
The Dyson Airstrait™ also features a dry styling mode perfect for refreshing your style in the days after your initial wet styling. This feature helps you retain and maintain your style for longer, while preventing you from having to constantly expose your hair to hot metal plates.
Let’s look deeper at the different hairstyles you can achieve by using the Dyson Airstrait™ on different hair types.
Using the Dyson Airstrait™ on Type 1 Hair
Type 1 hair is naturally straight, making it the easiest style to straighten. However, you may have Type 1 hair but find yourself with flyaways and tangles. The Dyson Airstrait™ can smooth your hair with airflow to give that natural straight look while keeping your hair looking neat and tidy.
We recommend going for the naturally straight blowout style. To get the look, start from wet with your machine set to 140°C, pre-dry your roots and section your hair. If you want more volume, pull your hair upwards and dry your roots from underneath.
Straighten your back sections by clamping your machine onto your hair and gliding it through, continuing until dry. Release your top sections and straighten your fringe, by taking your foremost section and gliding your machine through it. Style the remaining sections and switch to Cool mode. Run the machine through your hair on Cool mode to set your style. This will give you that naturally straight style, but with the added body and volume from using air instead of hot plates.
Using the Dyson Airstrait™ on Type 2 Hair
Type 2 hair is wavy, which is defined by having an S-shaped bend. The Dyson Airstrait™ preserves your hair’s form, while giving your hair a natural straight look. And if you feel like returning to your original hair shape, you can, without worrying about heat damage having made your natural hairstyle impossible.
To use your machine on wavy hair, simply clamp your machine onto a section of your hair and glide it through. Wavy hair is simple to straighten, and you can probably use large sections of hair to straighten your hair quickly.
The Dyson Airstrait™ makes a similar effect on Type 2 hair when compared to Type 1 hair, so we recommend you aim for a naturally straight blowout style if you have wavy hair.
How to straighten Type 3 hair with the Dyson Airstrait™
It’s especially important to use less heat with Type 3 and 4 hair, as curls and coils are especially fragile and susceptible to heat damage.
Because the Dyson Airstrait™ operates on much lower levels of heat than average straighteners, you don’t have to worry about overheating or burning your hair.
Using directional airflow to style, dry and smooth down your cuticle, the Dyson Airstrait reduces flyaways so you can straighten curly hair without frizz.
For curly hair, we recommend opting for the ’90s Straight blow-out. This is a fantastic look that will give you that throwback aesthetic quickly and easily. To begin, start with towel-dried hair and apply your favourite styling product.
Starting at the tips and working up to the roots, comb and detangle your hair. Set your machine to wet mode at 140°C and pre-dry your roots.
Section your hair and begin straightening at the back by gliding your machine through your hair, continuing until that section is dry.
Roll and pin those completed sections so that they each make a large loop. Release your top sections and straighten them.
Once they’re dry, roll and pin them into three rolls. Next, straighten, dry, roll and pin your fringe.
Now, wait while your rolls cool. Once they’re completely cool, release them. They will bounce down beautifully. Position your hair how you like using your Wide-tooth comb to personalise and finish your ’90s Straight blow-out style.
Using the Dyson Airstrait™ on Type 4 Hair
For Type 4 hair, a big issue with straightening can be retention. Often, typical straighteners rely on excessive heat to increase style retention. However, the Dyson Airstrait™ instead uses its Cool mode, blowing out cold air to help lock a style in place, encouraging the bonds in the hair to stay in their new place and retain the style. This cold air puts you at less risk of heat damage, by replacing the use of excess heat.
For Type 4 hair, we recommend a textured blowout. First, section your towel dried hair and apply your favourite styling product.
Comb and detangle each section before styling. Set your Dyson Airstrait™ to Wet mode at 140°c and pre-dry your roots.
Then, starting at the back, dry the mid-lengths and ends. Repeat this process on all your sections, ensuring that you keep your unstyled sections wet.
Once you’ve finished, add finishing product to your hairline.
Wrapping up
The Dyson Airstrait™ is ideal for any hair type and provides the full-body volume that typical straightening irons flatten away.
