How to style your hair using the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer
Knowing how to use your hair dryer makes all the difference when it comes to achieving the hair style you want. So we’ve put together a range of practical tips and tricks to help you achieve the best results with the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer – whether you're a professional hairstylist or looking to achieve salon-quality results at home.
Getting started with the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer
If you’re not yet familiar with adjusting your Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer’s temperature or airflow settings, or using each of the attachments, it’s worth watching our Getting started video.
Inside the machine
Traditional hair dryers often have a weak airflow and are powered by bulky motors, meaning they’re slow at drying. Before delving into styling specifics, let’s take a look at the engineering features that make the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer different.
The machine has four main technology features:
•At the heart of the machine is the powerful Dyson digital motor V9, producing a high-pressure, high-velocity jet of air.
•Intelligent heat control measures air temperature over 40 times per second, to prevent extreme heat and protect your hair’s shine.
•Air Multiplier™ technology amplifies air by three times, for faster drying.
•A variety of attachments cater to your distinct styling requirements and to all hair types.
The Dyson digital motor V9 and its 13-blade impeller spins at up to 110,000rpm, generating 3.2kPa of air pressure. Combined with Air Multiplier™ technology, the small but powerful motor delivers fast drying and precision styling.
10 Dyson Supersonic™ hair styling tips
1. Start with clean, towel-dried hair
Before styling, it's important to start with freshly-washed, wet hair that's been gently towel-dried.
2. Select the appropriate attachment
The machine comes with a range of magnetic attachments designed to style different hair types. For example, the Diffuser is perfect for enhancing curls, minimising frizz and adding volume, the Wide tooth comb attachment adds volume and shape to curly and textured hair, and the Styling concentrator is designed for precision styling.

3. Fine-tune heat and speed settings
Harnessing the true potential of the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer involves experimenting with its versatile heat and speed settings. The machine offers four precise heat settings, including a constant cold shot to set your style, and three precise airflow speeds. So, there are 12 combinations to find your perfect blow dry and these settings can be tailored according to your hair type and desired look. High heat and speed settings dry hair faster, while the lower settings help your hair retain a smooth, supple texture.
4. Divide and conquer with hair sections
For efficient and thorough drying, divide your hair into manageable sections using clips or hair ties. This approach allows focused airflow on smaller portions of hair, ensuring that every strand receives equal attention and dries uniformly.
5. Blow dry with brushes and combs
You can further enhance your style with the full range of Dyson Supersonic™ accessories, including brushes and combs. The Dyson Vented Barrel brush (45mm barrel) is designed for medium-length or long hair and creates volume and shape, while the 35mm barrel version is ideal for short to medium-length hair and fringes.
6. Lock styles in place with the cold shot
The cold shot button on the Dyson Supersonic™ allows you to set your style. It immediately deactivates the heating element for cooler 28°C air. Use the cold shot after drying and styling a section of hair to seal the style and achieve longer-lasting results.
7. Unleash curls with the Diffuser attachment
If you have curly hair, the re-engineered Diffuser attachment lets you style your hair with greater control. Attach the diffuser to the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer and gently place sections of your hair within the diffuser's prongs. This attachment simulates natural drying – infusing volume, and enhancing your natural curls or waves, with less frizz.
8. Create a smooth finish with the Flyaway attachment
Rather than turning to high heat to fix frustrating Flyaways, try hiding stray hairs under longer hair with the Dyson Supersonic™ Flyaway attachment. This ideal finishing tool uses the Coanda effect – a phenomenon first engineered for styling within the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler – to create sleek, straight styles. The attachment attracts and lifts longer hairs to the front, while pushing flyaways through the tress and out of sight. Hiding flyaways increases strand alignment and enhances natural shine.
9. Final flourish with serums or oils
Once your hair is dry and styled, finish the process with a hair serum or oil to introduce extra shine and further tame any flyaways. Dispense a small amount onto your palms, rub them together, and then gently run your hands through your hair for a polished finish.
10. Maintenance ensures longevity
To maintain powerful airflow, and keep your hair dryer performing at its best, clean the filter regularly. We recommend cleaning once a month, or when the three white LEDs flash continuously.

How to create an everyday blow dry
Add natural volume to your hair and create bouncy flicks with these five steps:
1. Start with clean, towel-dried hair.
2. Connect the Gentle air attachment to begin pre-drying with medium air flow speed and medium heat. This attachment diffuses the air, creating a gentle, cooler airflow – while still drying hair fast. Lift your hair to dry the roots and add volume.
3. Next, swap to the Smoothing nozzle for gentle, low-speed airflow. Keep to medium speed and medium heat.
4. Grab the Dyson Vented Barrel brush – either the 45mm or 35mm barrel size – and use with the Smoothing nozzle to blow dry and style one section at a time. Wrap your fringe around the barrel brush to create volume at the roots, then follow with the Smoothing nozzle as you pass the brush through the hair and roll it around the ends. Create flicks by alternating the direction of roll.
5. Finally, create a smooth finish with the Flyaway attachment. Select the high airflow speed and cold setting for fine hair. Start at the top, hold until your hair attracts, then slowly run down the length of your hair to hide flyaways. To style the back of your head, rotate the attachment by 45o by holding the cool edges and then repeat.
How to create defined curls and waves
This style is great if you already have curly or wavy hair but want to add definition and reduce frizz.
1. Start with clean, towel-dried hair.
2. Apply your favourite styling product.
3. Attach the Diffuser, ready to enhance your natural curls. Select medium air flow speed and medium heat.
4. Flip your hair upside down then diffuse and hold the top section from underneath.
5. Return your hair to a normal position. Diffuse and hold the curls at the back of your head. Tilt your head to repeat this on the sides.
6. Wrap curls around your finger and secure with a small clip. Repeat this around your hairline to frame your face, then hover the Diffuser over the pinned curls until dry.
7. Shake out your hair to finish.
