Our tips for a heatwave and how to keep cool this summer
If you’re struggling with the heat this summer, you’re probably not alone. Extreme temperatures can have a real impact on how we feel and function throughout our daily lives. Here are our top tips for staying cool in the heat this summer.
① Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of fluids regularly even if you do not feel thirsty, aiming for at least two litres a day. Avoid alcohol, caffeine or hot drinks. Minerals as Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium are particularly important now. Drinks rich in minerals not only help with hydrating on a cellular level but also ensure our water balance is balanced again.
② Beat the heat with cooling airflow
With temperatures soaring, staying cool can be a real challenge on hot summer nights. Our recommendations against the heat is Dyson HEPA Cool Formaldehyde. With Air Multiplier™ technology with 350-degree oscillation, projecting up to 290 litres of air per second, to cool you². It has been designed to be 20% quieter while maintaining purification performance for more cool, peaceful nights.
③ Close curtains and shutters
Letting in the sunlight on a bright day might seem the natural thing to do but this can create a greenhouse effect – with up to 30% of unwanted heat gain comes from windows.[1] So keep the windows, curtains or shutters closed during the day to minimize the amount of sunlight entering the home. Night-time is when summer temperatures tend to dip, so make a habit of opening windows at night to allow cooler air to enter. Then be sure to close them in the morning before temperatures rise and open them again in the evening as the temperatures gradually drop.
④ Reduce heat sources at home
Electronic devices can generate excess heat, contributing to the ambient temperature of the room. Traditional lightbulbs for example use up to 90% of their energy generating heat, with only 10% being converted to visible light.[2] So opt for energy efficient lights and get into the habit of turning off and unplugging all electronic devices that are not being used. Cooking in a pan or oven can also increase indoor temperatures, so opt for a lighter meal. This may have the added benefit of reducing indoor levels of PM2.5, which is often generated through combustion while cooking.
⑤ Regulate your body temperature naturally
Choose lightweight, breathable clothing and bed sheets such as linen or cotton and avoid man-made materials such as polyester. Natural fibers will absorb the moisture as you sweat, helping to cool your body naturally – while polyesters are water resistant and do not wick sweat in the same way. Surprisingly, consider taking a warm shower rather than an ice cold one. When the body is subjected to extreme cold, it tries to regulate its core temperature by controlling blood flow to the skin. This means that although a cold shower may offer a brief moment of respite, heat can be retained within the body. Following a lukewarm shower, the body will try to cool down and accelerate blood flow to the skin, which promotes heat loss.[7]

Is a Dyson air purifier able to lower the room temperature?
No, Dyson fans and purifiers are not designed to lower the room’s temperature and therefore is not an air conditioner unit. Rather, our products cool you by supporting the body’s natural cooling mechanism - by helping moisture evaporate from skin, which transfers heat from your body making you feel cooler.
Our devices provide you and your home with a powerful, targeted and pure cooling air flow.
How do Dyson fans work?
Our purifier fans use the Air Multiplier™ technology, which generates the circulation power to draw even distant pollutants into the machine, projecting purified air throughout the room.² And because they have no fast-spinning blades or grille, unlike conventional fans, they are safe and easy to clean.
How loud are the fans?
Thanks to the bladeless design our machines are engineered so that even the lighters sleepers can get a restful night of sleep. Which is crucial during hot summer nights as higher temperatures increase wakefulness, reduce deep wave and REM sleep. The Dyson HEPA Cool Formaldehyde is 20% quieter than the previous generation, and our Purifier Big+Quiet Purifier – is our quietest ever purifier, and up to 88% quieter in Night Mode.
So you can stay cool, without disturbing your sleep. Additionally, with the sleep timer feature, you can programme it to turn off after preset intervals, from 15 minutes to 9 hours.
