From cars to curls: the curation of Dyson colour palettes
How Dyson’s Automotive project inspired the Prussian Blue and Rich Copper colourway on Dyson’s Hair Care technologies.
After first being curated for the interior of the electric vehicle project, we're launching a new colour for our hair tools this festive season – Prussian Blue and Rich Copper.
The colour combination was first put together by the design team, as they sought to break away from the various shades of black that are frequently used in the automotive industry. Although the development of the EV project was stopped, the project continues to influence the engineering and design of future Dyson technology.

“We have a purposeful colour selection process for our technology and we look beyond the obvious. The new Prussian Blue and Rich Copper were originally selected for our car, we wanted to inject interesting colour into the automotive industry, which is normally dominated by a boring blanket of black.”
- Sir James Dyson, Founder and Chief Engineer at Dyson.
With James Dyson’s direction, a team of Colours, Materials and Finishes (CMF) engineers paired the copper accent with a blue base for the car's interior, drawing inspiration from the tones seen in precious metals. The exterior of the car was also tested in the same Prussian Blue to match the interior finishes.
Dyson introduced its first dedicated colours, materials and finishes team in 2016, based at its Hullavington Campus, UK. Working with the engineers behind the machines in the UK, Singapore and Malaysia, the team create colour schemes that complement the form and function of the product.
“When we engineer new technology at Dyson, the form and the function are intrinsically linked. They are combined and considered for optimising performance. By challenging the look, feel and form of our technology, we can engineer products that alter consumer perceptions and are industry-leading.”
- Emma Sheldon, Hair Care Category Director and former CMF Design Lead
Going back more than two decades, Dyson has a strong lineage in unique colour palettes. Its bright and boldly coloured vacuums provided an antidote to sterile and uninspiring alternatives. Unlike anything else seen on the market at the time, this desire to develop unique colours for Dyson machines remains true today. Engineers strive to find the balance between making a statement and creating something that works well in owners’ homes.
Dyson colour palettes are created to work across a full range of technologies. Colours are not limited to specific product lines or categories. Instead, engineers are encouraged to think about how colours can be applied to various products, in different ways.
Dyson’s 2021 Prussian Blue and Rich Copper tools are now available from Dyson Demo Stores and Dyson.com, each as part of a gift set paired with a selection of accessories, including a matching presentation case and Dyson-designed brush and comb when buying from Dyson direct.
