Pick-up Lab
We believe that vacuum cleaners should, first and foremost, be able to pick-up dust effectively. With floor types and debris differing around the world, testing plays an integral role in our development process.
At all stages of our product development, prototypes are put through their paces with rigorous testing in labs and in real homes – to ensure our machines work in real homes. There are three pick-up test rigs in the Malmesbury campus that enable our engineers to test in the early stages of development. In Malaysia, where engineers work on products in the later stages of development, there are ten test rigs, enabling them to test more extensively, with speed.

Pick-up Test Rigs
These rigs are set-up to replicate the average person vacuuming. We use it to perform industry-standard tests where a specific amount of dust is scattered on a specific test carpet that is made only on one loom in the world to ensure consistency in testing.
We also perform numerous other tests with different debris on different floor types to ensure our machines perform in different situations. One such test is a footprint roller with embedded dust to replicate debris people may track into their home, and how effective our machines are at removing these.

Floor Types
Different homes have different floor types; Asian homes typically feature more hard floors while Western homes are usually equipped with carpets. We test extensively on different floor types from tiles to wood, carpets of different pile lengths, and even tatami that is unique to Japan.
-
Debris
We test with over 60 types of debris to assess how effective our vacuums are at picking up real world debris. We source these from all over the world to ensure we test as representatively as possible, including rice and cat biscuits from Japan, sugar from Germany, and Cheerios from the UK and USA which are different in size.

Hair
Hair tangling around vacuums’ brush bars was a common user frustration that inspired the development of Dyson’s anti-tangle Hair screw tool.
We test with vast amounts of hair, particularly with Type 1 hair which is the straightest hair that requires the most force to break, to understand how hair fibres will interact with our machines.
