Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer vs. Dyson Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer – which one is right for you
Dyson established itself as a leader in hair care technology with its iconic Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer. In 2024, we launched Dyson Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer – our most significant update to the machine in eight years.
This guide compares the two machines, including their design, technology, and user experience – helping you decide which model best suits your styling routine.
Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer
Launched in 2016, Dyson Supersonic™ revolutionised the humble hair dryer. The machine offers fast drying without extreme heat and is known for its sleek, modern design and ergonomic build. Unlike traditional hair dryers, itʼs compact and cylindrical with the motor located in the handle.
Key design features include:
Digital V9 motor
Positioned in the handle, this small but powerful motor helps dry hair fast. Its 13-blade impeller spins at up to 110,000rpm, generating 3.2kPa of air pressure. Combined with Air Multiplier™ technology, the Digital V9 motor produces a high-pressure, high-velocity jet of controlled air.
Magnetic attachments
Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer comes with magnetic attachments that let you style your hair your way. These include the Diffuser, Gentle air attachment, Wide-tooth comb attachment, Flyaway attachment and Styling concentrator. The attachments provide a versatile range of styling options, from smooth blowouts to defined curls.
New attachments are fully compatible with older versions of the machine and the range is inclusive and specially designed to style all hair types.
Multiple airflow and heat settings
Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer has three precise air flow settings: high, for fast drying and styling, medium for regular drying and low for diffusing. There are also four heat settings: 100°C for fast drying and styling, 80°C for regular drying, 60°C for cooler drying and diffusing and 28°C for the constant Cold shot.
Dyson Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer
Dyson Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer builds on our original design and years of hair science study. With added intelligence and a network of Nural™ sensors, the machine auto-adapts to enhance natural shine and help protect scalp health.¹
While maintaining the original sleek, ergonomic build, the Dyson Supersonic Nural™ model includes:
Scalp protect mode
When activated, Scalp protect mode projects an invisible infrared beam that measures the distance between the machine and your hair.
Further away, the machine uses higher heat to maintain fast drying. It then automatically reduces heat and airflow as it nears your head – maintaining a comfortable 55°C temperature² for gentle, up-close drying.
Capsule illumination
Youʼll know how far away the machine is from your hair and scalp thanks to a light on the suspended capsule that changes colour (from red to orange, then yellow) as the air temperature decreases and the heat setting changes.
Pause detect mode
Dyson Supersonic Nural™ will also light up blue and slow right down to a low speed when Pause detect mode is activated. A motion-sensing accelerometer knows when the machine has been put down during styling or sectioning. It turns off the heater and automatically decreases airflow and noise, then switches back to the original settings when you pick the dryer back up.
Attachment learning
A Hall sensor recognises the unique magnetic ID inside each styling attachment, to identify which has been connected. The intelligent attachments automatically switch to your last-used heat and airflow settings – whether that’s the pre-set optimal settings recommended by our hair experts, or your own go-to preferences. So, if you prefer higher heat with the Styling concentrator but a cooler setting with the Wide-tooth comb, it remembers.
Intelligent heat control
Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler and dryer measures airflow temperature over 40 times a second, intelligently controlling the heating element to keep the temperature under 302°F (150°C). Preventing extreme heat damage.
"From our research into the science of hair, we know that there is a connection between the quality of hair and a healthy scalp.”

A new Wave+Curl diffuser
As well as coming with all the original Dyson Supersonic™ attachments, Dyson Supersonic Nural™ now has a brand-new Wave+Curl diffuser with two different modes. Dome mode infuses hair to enhance natural waves or curls, for a more defined finish. While Diffuse mode adds volume at the root for textured natural curls and coils.
Dyson Supersonic™ and Dyson Supersonic Nural™ are both innovative hair dryers, but they cater to different needs and preferences.
Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer is ideal for those who want a high-performance machine with advanced technology to protect their hair from extreme heat damage. Its sleek design, powerful airflow, and versatile attachments make it a great choice for everyday use.
For those who seek the latest in hair care technology, Dyson Supersonic Nural™ hair dryer takes the engineering of the original Dyson Supersonic™ to the next level. A network of Nural™sensors activates new features automatically, to optimise your styling routine and care for your scalp.
Your choice between the two will depend on your specific needs, whether you prioritise cutting-edge technology and personalised styling or a high-quality, reliable hair dryer with proven performance.
